Matched by Ally Condie

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): Individuals who are eligible to be married are Matched to their optimal partner when they turn 17, at a special event. Some individuals are never Matched, for various reasons. But something goes wrong for Cassia- she is given information about two separate young men that could be her Match. And that one deviation from the normal situation causes Cassia to doubt the whole system. Category : YA, dystopian, fiction Why I chose this book : Library app recommended it My personal opinion : I liked the book. It was an easy read- fairly deep topic (dystopian), but it wasn't oppressive. I like how the author left the details hazy; there was plenty of scope for imagination. No violence or inappropriate behavior. Just good old silent rebellion. I do plan to continue the series. Warnings Language: None Violence: None "Adult" situations: Attraction and light kissing Death: Yes, including major character(s) Movie rating equivalent : PG, maybe PG-13 Prota...

Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): A close-knit but eclectic group of travelers reunite in Solace after being apart for five years. But the Solace they find has changed a great deal, starting with occupation by a Draconian army. They add two barbarians to their group, and set off in search of answers about the magical staff one of the barbarians carries. One thing's for sure- by the end of the story, there will be dragons. Category : Fantasy Why I chose this book : I read it as a teenager, but don't remember much, so wanted to try it again. My personal opinion : This was a fun read. The story is interesting and the content is clean. I'm a sucker for magic and dragons, though, so it was pretty much a guaranteed thing that I'd like it. Warnings Language: None Violence: Fighting is frequent but not graphic "Adult" situations: Some reference to physical attraction, and a few references to the anatomical features of some women Death: Some, but not frequent Movie rating...

Brief synopsis (no spoilers):  A collection of comics from the Peanuts  Category: Comics/Graphic Why I chose this book:  Was part of the list of new books at the library, I've never read through the Peanuts comic series and wanted to do so. My personal opinion: A fun and quick read.  Warnings Language:  None Violence: None (other than maybe a few punches or falls to the ground) "Adult" situations: None Death:  None Movie rating equivalent: PG Protagonist description:    The gang's all here: Charlie Brown - the lovable wreck of a character   Linus - and his trademark blanket Lucy - Doling out not so helpful advice Sally -Charlie Brown's younger sister Snoopy - lovable dog who is always looking forward to suppertime The Red-Headed Girl - Charlie Brown's crush Schroeder - piano playing, Beethoven loving  Point of view of story:  3rd Book length:  Short Story flow:  Epi...

The Alcatraz Escape (Book Scavenger #3) by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): Emily and James participate in the latest challenge from Garrison Griswold, "unlock the rock," a large scale escape room game on Alcatraz Island.  Category: Juv Why I chose this book: Third in a series  My personal opinion: This one was pretty fun. It does have a few creepy elements, especially for beings stationed on an abandoned prison, but overall it was fun. I like how the puzzles are incorporated into the book.   Warnings Language:  None Violence: None (one character does get trapped by someone) "Adult" situations: None Death:  None Movie rating equivalent: PG (but there are some scary/creepy elements, e.g. dark places, someone getting trapped, inmate actors at the prison) Protagonist description:  Emily and James are great puzzle solvers and are eager to participate in this latest challenge.  Matthew - Emily's older brother who also wants to take part in the puzzle solving action. He gets blamed f...

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): Tales of the Norse gods  Category: Mythology    Why I chose this book:  I wanted to know the myths behind Thor and Odin and the other Norse gods without it being watered down by the movie industry.   My personal opinion: I enjoyed most of the stories, especially the introductory part about each of the gods and about yggdrasil (the world tree) and the nine worlds. My favorite story was of the Treasures of the Gods. It tells how Thor's hammer, Mjollnir, as well as many other "magical" items the god's use come to be.  Warnings Language:  Maybe one or two. Violence: Plenty, but dependent on the story.  "Adult" situations: Not a ton. One story talks about Loki tying a rope to his genitals for the entertainment of the other gods. Other stories may have mentioned things in passing, but I don't remember any other specific instances  Death:  Some, again dependent on the story.  Movie rating equival...

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) : 16 heirs are given a chance to compete for the Westing House fortune.  Category: Juv/YA Why I chose this book:  Started it several times since I was in middle school but had never finished it My personal opinion : I liked the book well enough, but the ending wrapped things up too quickly for me and left too many holes. Many of the characters were not well developed and it left me wanting more. It's similar to the movie "Clue" where a bunch of characters are thrown together and have to solve a mystery.  Warnings Language:  None Violence:  Explosions with minor injuries, one character kicks others in the shin  "Adult" situations : None Death:  One, main character Movie rating equivalent : PG Protagonist description : There are 16 different characters and we only get enough information about each to help us know their relationship to each other and their standing in the game.  Point of ...
