Magic Bitter, Magic Sweet by Charlie Holmberg

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) Maire has a talent for baking. She can imbue her creations with emotion or even simple abilities. Peace, love, memory, strength, alertness, etc. She is forcibly taken away from her home, and spends the rest of her time trying to get back to the only family she knew. She also has help from a mysterious, ghostly person, who appears to know her well. Category YA Fiction Why I chose this book I've loved every other book the author has written My personal opinion (the review) I love the stories by Mrs H, and have come to expect some pretty fantastical things- she has an incredible, unstoppable imagination. But this one really stretched me; it was almost too weird, too "out there". I don't care, though, I'll keep buying everything she publishes. Happy ending, good love story, gripping plot line. Weird or not, it was a great read. Warnings Language: None Violence: Some. Not frequent, not very graphic, but heart-wrenching "Ad

The Last Remnant by Pam Brandos

Brief synopsis  (no spoilers) Natalie has been searching for a cure for the duozi, back in her campus lab. Barba has been very supportive of her research, but Nat feels her next step is to go back to Fourline. Her relationship with her sister, Cal, is strained at best. They attend the same college, but they may as well be from different planets. Category Fiction, Fantasy Why I chose this book Next in series My personal opinion  (the review) Excellent end to the story. I like how Cal is involved. The love story is compelling. The action is engaging. The content is clean and interesting, which is perfect for my tastes. I recommend this book highly. Warnings Language: None Violence: Regular, but not graphic "Adult" situations: Just a kiss or two Death: None Other: the main antagonists are arachnid-like creatures Movie rating equivalent PG Protagonist description Natalie is now a strong contributor to the Fourline group, and she's very much in love Point of

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey

Brief synopsis   (no spoilers) Just about everyone is still dead. And the 5th wave is still crazy and mind-bending. Category YA, Dystopian Why I chose this book I sometimes like movie-book combinations My personal opinion  (the review) I gave the previous one a bad review, so I don't know why I even tried this one. But I guess it was either curiosity, or the fact that I got it from the library (free). It doesn't matter how interesting the story line is, or how believable the characters are, I don't want to fill my mind with that kind of language. Especially not when yelled by a small child. Warnings Language: steaming pile of f-words in the first handful of chapters of the book Violence: didn't get far enough to tell "Adult" situations: didn't get far enough to tell Death: about 7 billion Movie rating equivalent R, for language Protagonist description First few chapters were focused on Ringer, who is a serious warrior Point of view of story Third, centeri

The Hammer of Thor (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #2) by Rick Riordan

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) : Thor's hammer is missing and Magnus and his team must get it back or the end of the world will commence.  Category: YA  Why I chose this book:  Enjoyed Riordan's previous works, was trying to give the series a second chance  My personal opinion (the review): Awful, awful, awful! I didn't like the first book in this series, but I have enjoyed Riordan in the past so I wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself. How wrong I was. First, Magnus is a terrible character and is written poorly. The pop culture references are so dated. There is quite a bit of LGBT references. This is the scene where I put the book down. Magnus has just met a new character - Alex: “What did you mean earlier?” I asked. “When you said—” “Call me she? I’m gender  fluid  and transgender, idiot. Look it up if you need to, but it’s not my job to educate—” “That’s not what I meant.” “Oh, please. I saw your mouth hanging open.” “Well, yeah. Maybe for a sec

The Hidden Oracle (The Trials of Apollo #1) by Rick Riordan

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) : This picks up after The Blood of Olympus and we find out the punishment that Apollo receives from angering his father Zeus.  Category: YA Lit Why I chose this book: I have enjoyed Riordan's previous works My personal opinion: Terrible! Don't even start it, it's not worth it. From the beginning I couldn't stand Apollo (And yes, I know it's supposed to be that way, but I couldn't get over it). As a minor god he has always had everything done for him and his life has been easy. Even his previous punishments haven't been so bad. So when he comes to earth and things don't go his way all the time, he does nothing but whine.   I tried to push on through that, but what really got me to put the book down was the glorification of the LGBT sect. There was a bunch about Will and Nico and Apollo says something to the effect of, "If you are wondering if I thought it was weird to see one of my sons with another boy, w

Columbus Day by Craig Alanso

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) Aliens invade earth on Columbus Day, and the earth's best protective forces were completely capable of stopping them. They looked like man-sized hamsters. The only reason earthlings are still around is because another alien force came behind the hamsters and saved them. Now the allied aliens want Earth soldiers to help them fight in a galactic war. Category Sci-Fi Why I chose this book Available for free, via Prime Reading My personal opinion (the review) I was immediately gripped by the story. The narrator is witty and entertaining. The plot seems awesome, and I have a feeling it's going to take some pretty engaging twists. But I can't take the language anymore. It was pretty clean for about the first fourth of the book, but I only got a bit farther- about a third of the way through- before it became impossible to look past the f-bombs. This is the first book of the series. I will not finish or recommend this book, and I will not continue the

On the Meldon Plain by Pam Brandos

Brief synopsis  (no spoilers) Natalie Barns is a college student in one world, and trained Nala hunter (Warrior Sister) in another. She's doing her best to keep her feet in both worlds, but the pressure is catching up with her. From her previous trip to Fourline, she has a nasty wound that isn't healing. She learns that she must return through the barrier, to get it to heal, and to save her friend (and love interest) Soris. Category Fiction, Fantasy Why I chose this book Next in series My personal opinion  (the review) Because it has been so long since I read the previous novel in the series, I was a little lost at first. It took me a good while to remember what had happened, and I even had to pull out Gateway to Fourline and skim it, to refresh my memory on it. I recommend reading them a bit closer together in time than I did. Warnings Language: None Violence: Regular, but not graphic "Adult" situations: Just a kiss or two Death: None Other: the main an
