Rump by Liesl Shurtliff Reviewer #2

Brief synopsis (no spoilers): The back story behind Rumpelstiltskin Category: Juvenile/YA Why I chose this book: Recommended to me, 2016 SC Book Award Nominee, I love fairy tales  My personal opinion: This was a cute, easy read. I always enjoy hearing background/more information about characters that I like. Being that the book is marketed to kids and young adults I understand why Rump is 12 in the story, but I always imagined him to be an older man and this was somewhat of a disconnect for me. However, the story was still very enjoyable. I liked that Red (as in Little Red Riding Hood) was Rump's best friend. And I liked the way the author described the magic of his aunts.   Warnings: Bullying Movie rating equivalent: PG Protagonist description Point of view of story: First person, Rump Book length: Short Story flow: Fluid Grammar and spelling issues: None Character connection (no spoilers): I'd like to know a bit more background on Red's Grandmother, but it&#

Pale Queen Rising by A. R. Kahler

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) Claire is a human, stolen by a Fey queen, and trained as an assassin. She has no memories of her life before being the queen's adopted daughter, and likes it that way. Someone is trying to overthrow the kingdom, and Claire is tasked with taking them out. Category Fantasy (Adult) Why I chose this book Kindle First My personal opinion (the review) Way too much language, and way too much innuendo. Claire was constantly evaluating anything with legs for his/her/its potential use in bed. If she wasn't thinking about that, she was itching for her giant bathtub (pool) and enough alcohol to put down a WWF wrestler. Or killing someone. But if none of that scares you off, you might like this. The one thing it does have going for it is that it takes the fairy tale world and the Fey and describes them from an adult perspective. None of the everything-pink, princesses-and-unicorns mess. It talks about portals and the differences between Astral beings, wi

Master Magician Reviewer #2

Brief synopsis (no spoilers):   Throughout her studies, Ceony Twill has harbored a secret, one she’s kept from even her mentor, Emery Thane. She’s discovered how to practice forms of magic other than her own — an ability long thought impossible. While all seems set for Ceony to complete her apprenticeship and pass her upcoming final magician’s exam, life quickly becomes complicated. To avoid favoritism, Emery sends her to another paper magician for testing, a Folder who despises Emery and cares even less for his apprentice. To make matters worse, a murderous criminal from Ceony’s past escapes imprisonment. Now she must track the power-hungry convict across England before he can take his revenge. With her life and loved ones hanging in the balance, Ceony must face a criminal who wields the one magic that she does not, and it may prove more powerful than all her skills combined.   (Goodreads) Category: Adult, Fantasy Why I chose this book: Last in the series My personal opinion (the

The Glass Magician Reviewer #2

Brief synopsis (no spoilers):   Three months after returning Magician Emery Thane’s heart to his body, Ceony Twill is well on her way to becoming a Folder. Unfortunately, not all of Ceony’s thoughts have been focused on paper magic. Though she was promised romance by a fortuity box, Ceony still hasn’t broken the teacher-student barrier with Emery, despite their growing closeness. When a magician with a penchant for revenge believes that Ceony possesses a secret, he vows to discover it…even if it tears apart the very fabric of their magical world. After a series of attacks target Ceony and catch those she holds most dear in the crossfire, Ceony knows she must find the true limits of her powers…and keep her knowledge from falling into wayward hands. (Goodreads) Category: Adult, Fantasy Why I chose this book: Second in a series My personal opinion (the review): Of all three books in the series this was the worst. I feel like Ceony was more whiny in this book, especially about her rela

The Infinite by Lori Lee

Brief synopsis (no spoilers) Ninurta is trying to establish new leadership, when the town receives a visitor. Now the leaders have to learn how to handle internal issues and external relationships. And the Infinite have their own issues to face, so they're not always around to help. Category Sci-Fi, Fantasy Why I chose this book Next in the series My personal opinion (the review) I truly enjoyed the book, but a couple times I had a hard time picking it up and getting into it. There are quite a few characters to keep straight, so that can be kind of heavy. Also, the combination of made-up names and concepts, mixed with today's vocabulary and societal norms sometimes felt disjointed. But don't get me wrong- I enjoyed it, and I'll probably read the series again. And I hope the next one in the series comes out soon. Warnings Language: Fictitious bad word, no other bad language Violence: Fairly common, but not graphic "Adult" situations: None Death: Some
